MUMBAI: Imagine travelling from Chembur to Andheri in a Honda City every day when you don't even own a car—that too by merely sending an SMS from your mobile phone. The Mumbai traffic police department has adopted a car pooling initiative that helps people identify and share single occupancy vehicles plying across city roads.
Car pooling works when a motorist going in a particular direction decides to offer vacant seats in the car to others going in the same direction. "We have decided to support this social networking initiative called carpoolmumbai.com which is currently providing a free online car pooling service to city motorists," said Harish Baijal, deputy commissioner of police (traffic).
Carpoolmumbai.com will soon begin an SMS service through which a person can locate a car pooler plying close to his location who's ready to accommodate him and take him to his desired destination. The arrangement could be mutual or on the basis of an agreed sharing of fuel costs.
